NECBL Opening Day Preview
Jun 3, 2026

The 2026 New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) season is set to kickoff its 32nd season on Thursday, June 4th. Six games are slated for the day, so let’s take a quick look at what to expect for opening day.

The defending champion Keene SwampBats have seven returning players to the squad, including 2025 all-star reserve OF Michael O’Brien (Arkansas-Little Rock), who finished fifth in the league in home runs (8) and RBI (33). He will be leading the SwampBats in their opening day matchup with the Danbury Westerners at 6:35 p.m. ET at Alumni Field in Keene, New Hampshire. The Westerners will look to rebound from a 2025 which saw them narrowly miss the playoffs with a 21-22 record. 2025 All-NECBL honorable mention Jack Lutte (Denison) helps give the lineup some stability, as one of two players last year with an OPS of 1.000 or better (1.002). Both teams split the regular season series last season. They serve as the final game to get underway for opening day, however.

Firstly, the Yankees scout team will pay a visit to the Shark Tank to take on Martha’s Vineyard in an exhibition game, starting at 5:15 p.m. ET. The Sharks, the 2025 NECBL runners-up, will look to set the tone in this scrimmage matchup to start the year. Martha’s Vineyard’s Division III Region I All-American Nolan Romanowski (Salve Regina) looks to make a statement amongst all the D-1 standouts in the league.

The Upper Valley Nighthawks and the Sanford Mainers will face off over at Goodall Park in Sanford, ME at 6:30 p.m. 2025 All-NECBL honorable mentions Brendan Sencaj (Sanford, Bentley) and Mateo Wells (Upper Valley, High Point), headline the returnees for each team. Both teams split the regular season series, winning three games each of the six they played against each other in 2025.

The Valley Blue Sox and the Newport Gulls open their seasons against each other in Mackenzie Stadium in Holyoke, MA. Despite a 20-22 finish to last season, Valley prevailed in the five-game set between the two teams last year despite the Gulls finishing first in the South division. However, RHP Landon Hood (Gonzaga) looks to bring some firepower to the Gulls pitching staff, as the reigning West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year pitched to a 2.48 ERA in 54.1 innings for the Bulldogs this past season. Dylan Reid (Brown) will look to do the same for the Blue Sox after being named first-team All-Ivy League this past season.

The Bristol Blues will be hosting the Ocean State Waves at Muzzy Field. The Waves will look to rebound after a 15-28 record for the 2025 season. Bristol had their number last year, winning four of their five regular season matchups in 2025. The Waves look to get some good production out of 2B/OF Max Farrell (San Diego State), who recently made All-Mountain West First-Team as a freshman. Out of the 29 Division III ballplayers set to take part in this NECBL season, RHP Brycen Diaz (Bristol, Elms College) looks to be one of the most exciting. The 6’4, 290-pound righty pitched to the tune of a 1.63 ERA in 38.2 innings for the Blazers this past season.

Finally, the Mystic Schooners will welcome the Vermont Mountaineers to the state of Connecticut. Harrison Engle (Mystic, Fairfield) showed out in his freshman campaign for the Stags, making the All-MAAC All-Freshman team. Vermont has themselves a D-III stud in shortstop Elliot Miles (UMass Boston), who hit .409 for the Beacons and made the Region-II All-American First-Team.

The New England Collegiate Baseball League is a wooden bat college summer league that fields teams in all six New England states.
