Dexter Honored with Chris Ashmos 10th Player Award
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – For the second straight night, a “Sam” from the Northern Division is an end-of-year award winner for the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL), as Sanford’s Sam Dexter has been named the recipient of the 2015 Christopher Ashmos 10th Player Award, the league announced Monday night.
Honored for the late Chris Ashmos, who played for the former Mill City All-Americans in 2003 prior to his untimely passing, Dexter batted over .320 while helping the Mainers earn the No. 2 seed in the competitive Northern Division while the team finished five games over .500.
"From a coach's standpoint, we all look for players who want to win and understand what it takes to win, mixed with the class and sportsmanship we want to reflect our program,” Sanford head coach Aaron Izaryk stated. “Sam Dexter is a phenomenal player, a better person and someone who the Sanford organization couldn't be more proud of. Congratulations to Sam."
An Oakland, Maine, native, Dexter batted .324 – 10th in the NECBL – and posted 35 hits in 108 at-bats. Seeing action in 28 games, he plated 15 runs and scored 17 more while tallying five doubles and a home run. He concluded the regular season with a 0.774 OPS.
A rising senior at Southern Maine, Dexter finished with a .441/.495/.715 slash line and an incredible 1.210 OPS with 21 doubles, eight homers and 44 RBIs while scoring 57 runs this past spring.
