Mountaineers one win from
third straight finals after 7-3 win in Holyoke
HOLYOKE, Mass. – The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the
Holyoke Giants 7-3 in game one of the NECBL Northern
Division Championship Series.
The scoring started in the bottom of the first inning when
the Giants got a sacrifice fly from Kody Hightower to score
Justin Little from third base.
Kyle Massie (Vermont) tied the game in the bottom of the
fifth when he hit a groundball through the hole at shortstop
to score Robbie Nickle (William and Mary), who tripled in
the previous at-bat.
The big inning came in the sixth for the Mountaineers as
they plated six runs and sent 10 batters to the plate. Lanny
Stanfield (William and Mary) was hit with a pitch to start
off the inning. After Curt Smith ( Maine) singled, A.J.
Pollock (Notre Dame) attempted a bunt that was fielded by
Holyoke pitcher Mike Thompson and thrown wildly towards
first base, allowing Stanfield to score and Smith to advance
to third.
Mike Sheridan (William and Mary) intentionally walked to set
up a bases loaded, no out situation for Matt Prokopowicz (Hofstra),
who singled through the hole at short to score Smith and
Pollock. Chad Durakis ( Maryland) then hit a flare to
leftfield to score Prokopowicz, and would later score on
another RBI single by Massie.
The Giants got runs in each of the seventh and ninth innings
to set up the final score of 7-3, and give the Mountaineers
a chance to clinch their third straight NECBL Northern
Division title tomorrow in Montpelier.
Max Perlman (Harvard) earned the win in his first start of
the postseason after seven innings in which he struck out
four batters. Mike Thompson took the loss for the Giants,
only his second in ten starts all season.
The Mountaineers return to Montpelier Recreation Field in
game two of the NECBL Northern Division Championship against
the Giants, the first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
