Five-Run Seventh Powers
Sanford Past Vermont, 9-6.
MONTPELIER, VT -- The Sanford Mainers took advantage of a
five-run seventh inning and made it stand up to defeat the
Vermont Mountaineers 9-6 in front of 2048 at Recreation
Field in Montpelier.
Poor defense and base running handcuffed Vermont, who fell
behind early. Sanford got on the board first when Scott
Guillerault walked with one out. Max Most singled to put
runners on first and second. Each of them advanced on a
double steal. Chad Durakis allowed the first of his three
passed balls in the game, bringing home Guillerault to make
it 1-0 Mainers.
Sanford increased their lead to 4-0, plating three runs in
the fourth on four singles off Vermont Starter Mike Gaggioli.
Vermont made a game of it in the sixth, putting up three
runs on a 4-hit inning that saw three Mountaineer doubles to
make it 4-3.
Sanford would put it away in the seventh though, plating
five runs off Vermont’s bullpen. The Mainers batted around,
with the big hit being Tyler Stovall’s bases loaded two-run
single to make it 9-3.
Vermont put up three more in the seventh, thanks in part to
Mike Sheridan’s two-run double, but it was too little too
late for the Mounties, and that would conclude the scoring
as Vermont fell 9-6.
Gaggioli drops to 3-3 for Vermont, while Sanford starter
Richie Armento got his first win of the year to improve to
1-3.
Vermont begins a three game road trip tomorrow at Holyoke,
taking on the first place Giants at Mackenzie Stadium.
Gametime is 7 p.m.
Robin Roberts Returns
The final game of the regular season is scheduled for
Tuesday, July 31. This game will feature the return of Hall
of Fame great, Robin Roberts , back to the same field were,
in his final season of summer baseball, he led the Twin City
Trojans to the Northern League Championship 60 years ago.
His 18-3 record in 1947 caught the eye of a Philadelphia
Phillies baseball scout and he was signed to an amateur free
agent contract the next spring.
Two years later, Roberts, the ace of the Phillies, pitched
the "Whiz Kids" to their first National League pennant in 35
years. Roberts was a 20 or more game winner between 1950 and
1955 with his high water mark in 1952 when he won 28 games.
Roberts was inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame in 1976.
Roberts agreed to serve on the Mountaineers board of
directors at the outset of central Vermont ’s entry in the
New England Collegiate Baseball League in 2003. His strong
support for the Mountaineers program is seen through his
contribution back to the organization of any fees he
receives in the sale of his memorabilia when he is in town.
Mountaineers officials are planning a special event to mark
the 60th anniversary of Roberts’ last amateur appearance at
Recreation Field. Roberts will hold an autograph session the
morning of the game (9am to Noon at the Capital Plaza ), and
will be at the ball park for pre-game festivities that begin
at 6pm.
