STEEPLECATS SIGN ENERGY AND YOUTH
NORTH ADAMS, MA - The North Adams SteepleCats
of the 12-team New England Collegiate Baseball League
announce the signings of T. J. Greig, a 5' 9" outfielder
from Molloy College and Craig Crumbly, a 6' right-handed
pitcher from Florida Gulf Coast University.
Greig is a sophomore at Molloy College and was recently
named East Coast Conference Player of the Week for the week
ending March 16 as he hit .542 with five doubles, a triple
and 14 RBI for the Lions. On the season, Greig is nailing
the ball at a .392 clip with two homeruns and a team leading
26 RBI. His nine doubles and 46 total bases also pace Molloy
through 19 games. Greig has also scored 19 runs, good for
second on the Lions. As a freshman at Molloy last season, he
started to write his name in the school's record book with a
fourth best single season mark of 70 hits and a tenth best
44 RBI.
The left-handed hitting outfielder from Staten Island stayed
at home for his summer ball last year and a very memorable
couple of months. Playing for the Long Island Mustangs of
the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League, Greig was a Kaiser
Division All-Star, one of only seven freshmen to earn such
an honor. It was a well-earned accolade as he led the ACBL
in batting average at .403 and hits at 52 and was fourth in
on-base and slugging percentage at .455 and .457
respectively. In addition he swiped eight bases.
"TJ comes very highly recommended from his coaching staff
and professional scouts. It was quite an accomplishment to
hit over .400 using a wood bat last summer. He's a versatile
player, but is his best in the outfield where he can utilize
his speed and powerful arm. We expect TJ to create a lot of
havoc in the NECBL this summer," said McGrath.
Crumbly comes to North Adams from a program that SteepleCats
fans are familiar with as he plays his college ball at
Florida Gulf Coast University.
A freshman from Lakeland, FL, Crumbly is 2-0 in six
appearances, including one start, with a 2.08 ERA. Against
Florida International in Miami, he came in relief in the
third inning and pitched the next five innings giving up
zero runs on two, with two strike-outs and a walk. He has
surrendered just three extra base hits in 17.1 innings of
work while holding opponents batting average to .207.
"Craig's coach thought he found a diamond-in-the-rough last
season when he was recruiting Craig. While everyone was
scouting an opposing pitcher, Coach Roszel became very
interested in Craig's pitching ability and the more he
watched him, the more he liked him. He's very polished for a
true freshman and that's evident in the results early this
season. We are very confident Craig will play a crucial role
in the success of this year's pitching staff," said McGrath.
At FGCU, Crumbly is teammates with former SteepleCat and
2007 All-Star Game MVP Ozzie Borrell. Borrell was named the
Atlantic Sun Player of the Week this past week after hitting
.591 with nine RBI and a .955 slugging percentage. Borrell
is tearing up the A-Sun this season for Florida Gulf Coast
University, who currently sit atop the conference at 10-2
(18-5 overall) as he is second in the league in RBI with 26,
tied for fourth in HR with five and is twelfth with a .376
batting average.
The SteepleCats will open their 2008 campaign with a three
game home stand, starting on June 6th with a date against
the Torrington Twisters. June 7th sees the Newport Gulls
come to Joe Wolfe Field with the weekend concluding against
the Manchester Silkworms on June 8th. All three games have a
first pitch slated for 7 p.m. with the gates opening at 6
p.m. For more information, visit www.steeplecats.com.
