Montpelier, VT (July 29, 2007) The Holyoke Giants (24-16) were defeated by the Vermont Mountaineers (23-17) by a score of 14-5. The Giants were not able to clinch first place today, the magic number is still 2.

Scoring early and often seems to be something Holyoke has been doing recently and this game was no different as the Giants put 3 runs on the board in the 3rd inning. Craig Turner and Kevin Renaud led the inning off with a singles. With runners on 1st and 3rd first basemen, Kent Graham, singled to the right center gap scoring Turner. Graham was able to take second on the throw. Matt Remier followed with a blop single to right field, which scored Renaud. The final run came home when Kevin McDonnell grounded into a 6-4-3 double play that scored Graham.

Vermont answered quickly in the bottom of the 2nd with 2 runs on 2 hits. Giants starter Colin Feneis left the bases loaded that inning by striking out Shaun Hagey. Holyoke added another run in the top of the 3rd off of a Turner opposite field double. In the 5th inning the momentum of the game changed when the Mountaineers put together a rally of 6 runs bringing the score to 8-4. The highlight of the rally was a 2 RBI double by catcher, Chad Durakis.

Vermont put the game out of reach in the 6th and 7th scoring another 3 runs in each inning. The Giants added their 5th run in the 9th.
