Giants Win Thriller in Extras

HOLYOKE, MA - The Holyoke Giants (20-12) defeated the Newport Gulls (19-11) tonight by the score of 2-1.

Gulls' starter Adam Wilk carried a no hitter into the fifth and had it broken up on a groundball single down the middle by Pete Vander Kolk with two outs.

The Gulls scored their only run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth, and Giants were able to tie the game in the seventh inning, when Kody Hightower scored on a passed ball by Matt Iannetta after getting the Giants? second hit of the game.

The Gulls threatened in the eighth inning, as they had a runner aboard with one out. Brandon May doubled into centerfield and Gabriel Saade attempted to score on the relay by shortstop Kyle Bellows, who threw a strike home. Saade was called out at home and immediately ejected for malicious contact, as he attempted to run over Giants' catcher Jack Cawley on his way to the plate.

After Giants' starter Shawn Gilblair pitched eight stellar innings, striking out five, Dan Grubbs came in to pitch the ninth. He retired the side in order on five pitches. The Giants failed to score in the bottom of the ninth, but Grubbs was able to get out of a jam in the tenth, giving the Giants an opportunity to take the walk-off win. In the bottom of the inning, leadoff hitter Pete Vander Kolk reached on a two-base error, moved to third on a fielder's choice bunt by pinch hitter Kevin McDonnell, and scored on a wild pitch Gull?s reliever Jared Koon.

The Giants will play tomorrow night against the Vermont Mountaineers at 6:30pm in Vermont. Dustin Corbett (4-0) will take the mound for Holyoke looking for his fifth win of the year. The Giants will be home again on Saturday, July 21 to take on the Concord Quarry Dogs at 6:30pm. They will be wearing throwback Holyoke Millers jerseys and giving out Millers hats to the first 200 fans in attendance as a part of 'Throwback Night' at MacKenzie Stadium. There will also be an auction giving fans a chance to win game-worn throwback jerseys as well as gift certificates raffled off.
