Dukes Share a
Pair with SteepleCats
North Adams,
Mass. (July 28, 2007) – The Dukes once again took the opening
act of a doubleheader, they beat the North Adams SteepleCats 3-1
at the Duquette Sports Academy in Hinsdale for game one, but
fell 6-2 in the night cap at Joe Wolfe Field in North Adams.
The initial attempt at playing the first game at Wahconah Park
was thwarted by some torrential downpours that flooded the field
and caused the contest to be moved to the Dan Duquette Sports
Academy in Hinsdale.
Mitch Clegg (University of Maine) got the ball in game one, and
picked up his first win of the season. Clegg went
five-and-a-third innings, giving up one run on eight hits,
walking one and striking out another. He turned the ball over
the Jack Bender (Georgetown University) in the sixth, who got
the Dukes out of trouble after inheriting runners on the
corners.
Bender came back out and threw a perfect seventh for his fifth
save in as many tries as Pittsfield won the thirteenth game of
the season. Paul Heidler (Longwood University) had the big hit
in the game, a two-out two-run single in the second, plating
Chester Wilson (Southern Utah University) and Sam Shaughnessy
(Boston College).
Pittsfield landed another blow in the fifth as Alex Hassan (Duke
University) was driven in on an RBI double from Tyler Stampone
(The College of the Holy Cross). Stampone and Adam Tempesta
(University of Massachusetts) were the only Dukes with two hits
in the game.
Game two was dominated by North Adams started Bobby Germane
(Rhode Island College), who went six innings allowing one run on
five hits while striking out six. Stampone had two more hits in
the night cap, as did Jeff Lieneck (Wheaton College). Wilson
scored both Dukes runs at Joe Wolfe.
Pittsfield is off on Sunday and will have their final home game
of the season Monday as they host the Lowell All-Americans at 7
at Wahconah Park. They still have three games against the
Manchester Silkworms, with a twin bill scheduled for Tuesday,
and an if necessary game on Wednesday, both of which will be at
Northwest Park.
