Dukes Washed Out
in Manchester
Manchester,
Conn. (Thursday July 19, 2007) – The game that was originally
scheduled to be played on July 4th between the Pittsfield Dukes
and Manchester was rained out for the third time, this attempt
as the front of a doubleheader.
It is likely that the two teams will play a doubleheader on July
31st, to finish the first game that was started on July 9th at
Wahconah Park. With a 1-1 count on Nelson Gomez (Keystone
College) the game was delayed due to lightening, the called
shortly thereafter following high speed winds and devastating
down pours.
Thursday’s game never got a chance to resume as Northwest Field
was hit hard with heavy rains at around the four o’clock hour,
when the first game was scheduled to begin.
The trip was not without event for Pittsfield, however. While on
the road to find a meal before the journey home, the team,
traveling in three separate vehicles, saw a Volkswagen stuck in
a knee deep puddle that had temporarily flooded the street near
the turn off for Interstate 84.
One of the team vans along with the SUV of a team member who was
driving, more than a dozen players and Manager Mike Marron
rushed to the driver’s aid. After instructing the driver to put
the car in neutral, the rain-doused dozen pushed her car off of
the main drag and into a near-by shopping center. The passengers
in the car, a mother at the wheel and infant in a baby seat in
the back, were grateful for the help of the NECBL squad.
The Dukes, who have been rained out in consecutive days for the
second time this season, will try again Friday night as they
travel to Torrington to take on the Southern Division leading
Twisters at 7 p.m.
