Two Dukes Named
to NECBL Southern Division All-Star Roster
Pittsfield,
Mass. (July 18, 2007) – Alex Hassan (Duke University) and Nelson
Gomez (Keystone College) were selected to represent the
Pittsfield Dukes in the 2007 All-Star Game in North Adams on
July 22nd.
Hassan, who has been the most consistent presence at the top of
the Dukes’ lineup for during the 2007 season, will start in the
outfield at Joe Wolfe Field on Sunday. Hassan is third on the
team in batting average at a mark of .308, he also leads the
team in runs batted in with 16, runs scored with 26 and stolen
bases with 14 in as many attempts.
Not only has he been a force as a batter for the Dukes, Hassan
has also contributed on the mound. He leads the team in
earned-run-average at 1.80 in his three appearances, which
includes two starts. His defense in centerfield for Pittsfield
has been sterling as he has not committed an error in 78
chances, and also has six assists.
The other Duke on the Southern Division All-Star roster will be
Nelson Gomez out of a reserve role. Gomez, who had a team-high
13 game hitting streak at one point during the season, has been
a solid performer in the middle of the Dukes’ lineup with a
batting average of .275 with four doubles, and is second on the
team with 14 runs driven in.
Gomez will come off of the bench in the game on Sunday and is
likely to be the Dukes’ representative in the Home Run Derby
that will be held at Joe Wolfe at 4:20 p.m. While Gomez does not
have long ball so far in the NECBL season, he had eleven homers
during his season at Division III Keystone College.
Hassan, Gomez and the Dukes will continue their road trip
Wednesday as they head to Danbury, Manchester for two games on
Thursday and wrap it up Friday in Torrington.
