“Once in a lifetime prospect” Stephen Strasburg drafted #1

Former Torrington Twister and current San Diego State hurler Steve Strasburg was the overall first pick in the MLB First-Year Player Draft. The Washington Nationals, to no one’s surprise, picked Strasburg who’s been touted by many major league scouts as a once in a lifetime prospect. Over his 3 years with SDSU he compiled a 22-7 record with an eye-popping 1.59 ERA. He held opponents to a
.171 average while striking out 375 and walking only 50 in 243 1/3 innings. In 2009 he went 13-1 and capped off the year tossing a no-hitter in his final home game getting his team into the postseason for the first time since 1991. Steve was a closer for the Twisters and was set to return for a second summer when Team USA came calling. He did return to Torrington but this time wearing the red, whit and blue. He was the lone amateur on the USA Olympic team. Needless to say the New England Collegiate Baseball League is proud of Steve and we wish him a long and successful career.

Brian Wilson Saves Johnson’s 300th victory

In 2001, little did San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson know when he pitched for the NECBL’s Keene Swamp Bats, that his path would cross with future Hall of Famer Randy Johnson. It’s 2009 and the five-time Cy Young Award winner was attempting to become only the 24th pitcher to achieve the lofty goal of winning 300 games. Johnson threw 6 innings of 2-hit ball allowing only 1 unearned run. It was Wilson’s gut-wrenching task to save the game escaping a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the eighth inning by retiring the Washington Nationals’  Adam Dunn on a called third strike, and then pitched the ninth to notch his 13th save and preserve Johnson's triumph.

Week #3 - Ending 6/28/09

Co-Players of the Week

  Jantzen Witte SS/3B
Vermont Mountaineers
Texas Christian University
Freshman
Arlington, TX
Once again there were many stellar performances making it very difficult to single out one player.
Witte started 5 games getting 10 hits in 20 ABs with a double, 1 HR and 5 RBI.
He walked 3 times and his OBP matched his batting average of .500 helping Vermont to a 5-0 week.

  Casey Lytle RF
Pittsfield American Defenders
University of Kansas
Sophomore
Phoenix, AZ
Pittsfield’s gotten off to a tough start but Lytle’s season is going well. Last week he had the highest average at .600
getting 9 hits in 15 ABs with a double and 3 RBI. Add a walk and he garnered a .647 OBP. Casey also stole 1 base.

Pitcher of the Week

  Jason Markovitz LHP
North Shore Navigators
Long Beach State
Junior
Santa Cruz, CA
It's too bad starting pitchers can't get a save in their own game.
Markovitz out-dueled Lowell's Matt Shapiro throwing a complete game 2-hit shutout, the first in Navigators' history.
The Navs gave Jason a lead in the bottom of the 8th and he came out in the 9th and shut down the All-Americans
1-2-3 improving his record to 3-0.
